Mad Professor, the Guyana-born dub producer and engineer Neil Fraser, has joined Midnight Agency. A pivotal figure in the evolution of dub music, Fraser began his career in the late 1970s, building custom mixing desks and sound equipment.
He launched Ariwa Studios in South London in 1979 and soon released the Dub Me Crazy series, which helped shape the sound of modern dub. Over four decades, Mad Professor has collaborated with reggae legends including Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly and Robbie, Pato Banton, Jah Shaka, and Horace Andy, as well as artists outside traditional dub like Sade, Massive Attack, The Orb, Gaudi, Grace Jones, Marcelinho da Lua, and Perry Farrell.
His 1995 remix album No Protection, a dub reinterpretation of Massive Attack’s Protection, was widely acclaimed and remains one of the best-selling dub albums of all time. He has performed at major festivals around the world and received multiple accolades, including the Best Reggae Producer award for seven consecutive years.
Known for his pioneering live dub shows, Mad Professor was among the first to bring dub mixing to the stage, using multitrack recordings and compact mixing setups. His performances often feature collaborators from the Ariwa label, including Aisha and the late Lee “Scratch” Perry. Fraser is credited with playing a key role in Perry’s creative resurgence in the 21st century.
In 2025, Mad Professor continues to tour internationally, bringing his signature dub sound to new audiences. With over 30 dub albums released and a catalogue exceeding 350 titles, his impact on reggae, dub, and sound system culture remains unmatched.
