Boogey The Beat
For years Anishinaabe DJ and producer Les Boulanger — known by audiences as Boogey the Beat — has toiled behind the scenes, laying the sonic foundations for other musicians’ anthems. As a longtime lover of hip-hop and rap, collaboration is his comfort zone. He’s worked with the likes of The Halluci Nation (formerly a Tribe Called Red) and Snotty Nose Rez Kids, playing stages across Turtle Island.
In homage to the sounds of a sundance, Boogey builds each song around a percussive heartbeat, then adds vocals and other instruments, letting the drum lead the way. He remembers walking up to one of his first childhood pow wows and hearing the big drum, a guiding force that stays with him today.
While he hopes his music will resonate with revellers from all walks of life, he beams at the thought of Indigenous youth hearing pow wow and sundance songs for the first time at one of his shows.
“It’s important to not forget that at one time it was illegal for us to sing these songs, play these drums, and go to these ceremonies,” he says. “Now it’s a time for celebration, and for us to take over the main stage.”

Five Alarm Funk
Teritory: Canada / AUS / NZ
Five Alarm Funk is a horn-powered, percussion-fueled sonic and visual assault. Over 17 years of hard funking the band has burned up stages on four continents, released six studio albums and received two Juno Award nominations (Canadian Grammys). And this ride isn’t about to slow down. Five Alarm Funk is set to release their 7th studio album, Big Smoke in 2020. The 11 tracks get right to the roots of what Five Alarm Funk is all about: epic, intense arrangements, heavy groove and a ton of fun.
As drummer, vocalist, and band leader Tayo Branston puts it, “Big Smoke is the tighest, funkiest and most energized album we've ever created, it's the culmination of 17 years of creating, recording and performing together. We call it Punk Funk – it’s got the punch of heavy hitting dance music with the energy of a ruckus live concert.”
The album features two collaborations, the first with the legendary Bootsy Collins delivering hook-laden, funktastic vocals over a heavy swung groove on We Play The Funk. “I’ve been a Bootsy Collins fan ever since I was 15,” Branston marvels. “That track we made with him is one of the funkiest things we’ve ever cut.” Next, bari sax phenom Leo P of Too Many Zooz lays down his trademark squawks and melodic squeals for Wake the Funk Up, a supremely syncopated, chromatic laden jam. That collaboration emerged out of a jam session with Too Many Zooz in front of thousands at the Winnipeg Folk Fetsival and turned into a string of concerts with Leo P joining Five Alarm Funk on stage.
For all the honing their studio craft, the Five Alarm Funk’s epic live show is still what defines the band. The sweat-drenched concerts are infused with an intense spirit of fun that breaks down barriers between band and audience and moves both into a manic dance party. Wild costumes, props, and choreography compliment the seriously tight arrangements and genre-mashing grooves. As Vancouver’s Georgia Straight put it “I lost control and went on a dance rampage... You guys blew my mind and body.”
That live show has taken Five Alarm Funk on dozens of North American coast to coast tours, performing at over 100 festivals in the last three years alone. The band has also begun to break ground abroad, with performances in Taiwan, Mexico, and a performance for international peacekeeping forces in Mali. Five Alarm Funk plans to keep the momentum going in 2020 with another busy summer of festivals and the band’s first European tour.

Making it with such incredibly talented people and learning so much from them all. Ollie first emerged on the hip-hop scene after a life-changing car accident sparked an awakening, leading him to leave his athletic dreams behind and drop out of university.
It was music that Ollie turned to as a form of therapy. Music was always one of his passions, but not something he seriously pursued until coming face-to-face with death. Ollie shifted his focus to creating dynamic deliveries and engaging lyricism to reflect his experiences — including those concerning overcoming obstacles, facing adversity, and being proud of who you are. This path lead him to become the person he is today – an artist inspiring others using the mantra, “More Than Music.”
Pulling inspiration from hip-hop/r&b, pop, rock and country, the latter of which serving as representation of his small town upbringing, Ollie’s music presents itself as a unique catalogue of sounds and cadences. Moreover, Ollie’s skillset highlights his ability to adapt to different genres effortlessly, creating a series of lyrical paintings that are not only captivating, but relatable. “I started off being heavily influenced by hip-hop, and as time went by, I learned to appreciate a lot more music. When I began exploring different genres, my music and sound started to take form. I found my voice,” notes the Toronto-based artist.
Early in his career, Ollie was heavily involved in the YouTube community. At the age of 16, he opened his first YouTube channel and began uploading gameplay commentaries. This eventually drove him to create a music channel where he would promote the sounds of up-and-coming artists. Ollie’s desire to promote other undiscovered talent only further inspired him to begin releasing his own music under an alias that took form from his father's childhood nickname. He began writing, recording and releasing these songs, quickly getting featured on videos of popular gamers and personalities, building awareness around Ollie in the YouTube community. This subsequently translated to over 45K subscribers on YouTube, and over 626K monthly listeners on Spotify. In turn, this created an unbreakable bond between an artist and his constantly growing fanbase.

Shaela Miller has spent over a decade in Alberta country music. Her Joan Jett vibe, superb songwriting chops, and outstanding vocal tone could have put her on a number of different paths, but she remained loyal to the magnanimous sounds of southern Alberta's prairies.
As a highly respected independent artist from the Canadian prairies, Shaela Miller is playing the music she wants to. She adds her own esthetic elements that make her vision unique while staying firmly planted in a sound that generations before her grew up hearing on AM radio and local honky tonks. Her picked-up shuffles, yearning waltzes, and weeping steel guitar cuts depict the good, bad and ugly times that can only be written by someone who’s lived and truly felt every minute of them.
With her sonic inspiration rooted in the 1970's golden era of songwriting, Shaela's production focuses on colourful percussive detail, lush instrumental portraits & locked in rhythm section while never losing focus on the strong songwriting and inimitable vocal styles she has become known for.
Shaela’s latest single, Tidal Wave (March 8, 2022) was released on International Women’s Day. It’s an in-depth confession of realizations and struggles of the heart and how women can feel, inside and outside of love, like they are drowning in the staggering multidimensional responsibilities of life. Miller is currently writing for her next album and is set to return to the studio in the later months of 2022.

Listening to the abundant sounds of the Seattle-based funk & soul group, The True Loves, is like walking down a favorite neighbourhood street, slapping-five with friends, checking up with clerks in their stores, admiring your own dark sun-glassed face in their windows, ducking under flowerpots and smelling the familiar smells of your most cherished locale. The band is its own block party.
What began in 2014 as a jam session between three of the city’s best - pocket-perfect drummer
David McGraw, intoxicating bassist Bryant Moore and otherworldly guitarist Jimmy James - has
since blossomed into a global force that now features percussionist Iván Galvez and four horn players: trombonists Jason Cressey and Greg Kramer and saxophonists Gordon Brown and Skerik. Together, the group’s live performances have garnered them much local acclaim and millions of streams on YouTube.
In 2017, the True Loves recorded their debut instrumental LP, Famous Last Words, which received citywide adoration and earned them spots at coveted festivals like Sasquatch, Doe Bay, and Upstream. Wannabe has been thrilling audiences and blowing the roof of concert venues across North America for the past 10 years. With giant personalities, mega-watt singing voices,
spot-on choreography, costume changes, English accents and platform shoes, these powerhouse women have brought Girl Power into the 21st century with their larger-than life epic shows.
Wannabe is the brainchild of a group of Toronto based performers and musicians who also just happen to be best friends. The idea for Wannabe was born one summer when
the girls were crammed in a house together performing in a summer musical, right
around the start of 90’s nostalgia. The girls went to work. After an intense period of
“Spice Girls Training”, which included studying concert footage and music videos,
creating choreography, arranging songs and harmonies, assembling a six-piece backing
band, and rehearsing for several months, Wannabe was ready to hit the stage for what
they thought would be a one-off concert for friends and family at the legendary Toronto
venue, The El Mocambo. They were wrong. The show sold out and the band hasn’t
looked back sinceWannabe has grown to become one of the most sought after acts in North America, selling out concert halls, theatres, clubs, casinos, outdoor festivals and more. As the band has gained popularity, the shows have expanded to include not only Spice Girls songs, but hits from other 90’s superstars including Brittany Spears, Janet Jackson, and Madonna. The girls have appeared on stages alongside legendary 90’s acts including TLC, The Goo Goo Dolls, Aqua, 98 Degrees, O-Town, Lance Bass (N’Sync) and Aaron Carter.
Wannabe is as close to the real thing as you’re ever going to get.
Wannabe is Barbara Johnston, Suzy Wilde, Anika Johnson, Jaz Fairy-J and Cat Merriam.
