Closer is the latest single taken from the EP Escape by Pakistani-born/Surrey-raised producer Khanvict.
Closer also marks the first collaboration between model and anti-colourism activist Seema Hari. The software engineer’s writing regularly addresses the global cosmetic industries perpetuation of so-called fair, lightening and whitening products as well as other issues. Filmmaker Anjali Nayar (Silas, Gun Runners) directed the video for the song, which was shot during pandemic quarantine and inspired by the moving and important stories coming out of BIPOC communities over the Summer of 2020.
“The three artists decided to explore how issues of colour and caste affect — and infect — the South Asian community.”
Inspired by equal parts Bollywood composing legend AR Rahman and electronic contemporaries such as CloZee and Troyboi, the tune drops female children’s choruses alongside slamming bass drops and sharp percussion and washes of orchestra. It’s another fine track from the artist who is riding a wave of attention for his finely crafted fusion of sounds.
