Midnight Agency is thrilled to announce the newest addition to its talented roster of artists, MOONRIIVR. Led by Gavin Gardiner and "Champagne" James Robertson, this indie-folk ensemble brings a sound that defies time and space, showcased in their debut album, Vol. 1.
The story of MOONRIIVR's inception is a serendipitous tale of musical fate. In the spring of 2020, during the early days of the pandemic, Gavin, best known as the front person for Juno-nominated indie-folk mainstays The Wooden Sky and a skilled producer & engineer at All Day Coconut studios, paid a visit to his friend James at the Robertson family farm north of Toronto.
James, having previously toured as lead guitarist with acts like Lindi Ortega and Dwayne Gretzky, found himself similarly adrift during those uncertain times. Their paths had crossed previously in Toronto's vibrant music scene, and fate had a delightful surprise in store for them - the opportunity to collaborate. Armed with a vintage Tascam 388 tape recorder, mellotron, and a nylon string guitar, the two musicians delved into their creativity.
Leaving the serene farm setting, Gavin and James returned to Toronto, where they roped in the talents of bassist Ben Whitely (The Weather Station, Basia Bulat, Julia Jacklin) and percussionist extraordinaire Lyle Molzan (Kathleen Edwards, Corb Lund). Together, these four exceptional artists embarked on weekly sessions to refine the sound that had taken shape during those initial farm writing and recording sessions.
The result of their collective effort is MOONRIIVR's debut album, Vol. 1, a masterpiece that weaves sonic wonders with elements of the past and a futuristic touch. The songs on this aptly titled album were crafted on an old analogue tape machine, adorned with sweetly reverberating slide guitars, wonky string synths, and nimble percussive environments. MOONRIIVR's ability to create soundscapes that are simultaneously dreamlike and inviting lends Vol. 1 a distinctive, out-of-time feel, resonating with audiences young and old.
Gavin Gardiner expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "MOONRIIVR has really opened up a whole new musical world to me that I had heard in the music I loved." This passion shines through in every note of Vol. 1, leaving listeners eager for more from this exceptional ensemble that draws from decades past while transcending the boundaries of any era.
