Midnight Agency proudly welcomes Balaklava Blues to its roster. Created by Mark and Marichka Marczyk amidst the Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, the group blurs the lines between traditional European folk song cycles and an avant-garde techno infusion, with influences spanning from EDM to electro-pop.
The essence of the group's identity is encapsulated in their name, Balaklava Blues, which reflects the transformative period in Ukraine since 2014. The balaclava symbolizes this change; it's a vehicle for vulnerability and authenticity, stripping back layers to reveal the soul in their music. Their artistic approach has garnered international acclaim, with their theatrical production "Counting Sheep" winning the Fringe First award and Amnesty International’s Freedom of Speech award at the Edinburgh Fringe, as well as the 2021 Stingray Award.
In their performances, Balaklava Blues combines heartfelt vocals with compelling visuals, including frontline footage, historical archives and animation, offering a rich, immersive experience. This not only captures the audience's imagination but also imparts a deeper understanding of Ukraine's enduring narrative of conflict and courage.
Through their art, Balaklava Blues harnesses the power of music to redefine the narrative of violence in Ukraine, crafting it into a resonant anthem of solidarity and perseverance, encapsulating what CBC Arts calls "a profound and compelling meditation on the human drive to persevere."
